About the HAL Tejas Fighter Jet

Tejas represents India’s first indigenously developed fighter aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defense capabilities. While the airframe is domestically produced, the jet currently uses imported engines.

Key Development Milestones:

  • First test flight of Technology Demonstrator-1 (TD-1) conducted in 2001
  • Second Series Production (SP2) aircraft with Initial Operational Clearance flew in 2016

Developed through collaboration between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the Aeronautical Development Agency, Tejas is a versatile single-engine light combat aircraft designed for multiple combat roles.

Mission Capabilities:

  • Aerial interception of enemy aircraft
  • Air-to-surface strike missions
  • Anti-shipping operations

The aircraft’s advanced construction using aluminium-lithium alloys, titanium alloys, and carbon-fibre composites makes it exceptionally lightweight and highly maneuverable in combat situations.
