Amazon Cuts 14,000 Jobs in 2025 Despite Record Profits

Amazon has eliminated 14,000 positions in 2025, marking its deepest workforce reduction in 31 years, according to a CNBC report. The layoffs primarily targeted engineers, with approximately 4,700 engineering roles cut across multiple US states.

Key Details of the Layoffs

  • Total Job Cuts: 14,000 employees
  • Engineering Impact: ~4,700 engineers laid off
  • Primary Locations: Washington, New York, California, New Jersey
  • Affected Divisions: Video games, advertising, AI, cloud computing, retail, and grocery businesses

The workforce reduction represents approximately 40% of Amazon’s engineering workforce. This comes despite the company reporting strong financial performance and surging profits.

Industry-Wide Tech Layoffs

Amazon joins other major tech companies including Dell, Intel, TCS, Meta, and Microsoft in conducting significant workforce reductions. According to Layoffs.fyi tracking data, 237 tech companies have laid off 114,124 employees so far in 2025.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is pushing to transform the company’s culture to operate “like the world’s largest startup.” HR chief Beth Galetti stated the layoffs aim to drive innovation with fewer personnel, particularly in engineering roles.

The tech industry continues to face structural shifts with rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and automation driving organizational changes across the sector.
