Indian Railways Crosses 1 Billion Tonne Freight Loading Milestone

Indian Railways Achieves Historic 1 Billion Tonne Freight Milestone

Indian Railways has crossed a monumental freight loading milestone, reaching 1020 million tonnes (MT) as of November 19, 2025-26, demonstrating robust support for India’s economic infrastructure.

Key Highlights

  • Freight loading crosses 1 billion tonne mark (1020 MT)
  • Coal leads with 505 MT, followed by iron ore (115 MT) and cement (92 MT)
  • Daily loading improves to 4.4 MT from 4.2 MT last year
  • Sustainable rail logistics support India’s net-zero goals

Sector-wise Freight Contribution

The record freight loading reflects broad-based support across key economic sectors. Coal remains the dominant contributor at 505 MT, followed by iron ore (115 MT), cement (92 MT), container traffic (59 MT), and various other essential commodities including fertilisers, foodgrains, and steel products.

Sustained Growth Momentum

Daily freight loading continues to hold strong at approximately 4.4 MT, showing improvement from 4.2 MT recorded last year. The April-October period further underscores this positive trend, with loading reaching 935.1 MT in 2025 compared to 906.9 MT during the same period last year.

Cement Sector Reforms

Recognizing cement’s critical role in infrastructure development, Railways has implemented comprehensive reforms including the Policy for Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalized rates for bulk cement movement in containers. These strategic measures aim to modernize cement transportation by increasing bulk handling capacity, reducing transit time, and lowering logistics costs.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The shift to rail transportation for bulk goods delivers multiple advantages beyond commercial metrics. It significantly reduces carbon emissions, decongests highways, and provides industries including MSMEs access to greener logistics solutions. These developments align freight operations with India’s journey toward Net Zero Carbon Emission targets, positioning Railways as a catalyst for both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
