Tesla Opens First Full-Fledged India Centre in Gurugram This Month

Tesla Expands in India with First Full-Fledged Gurugram Centre

Tesla is accelerating its India presence by opening its first comprehensive facility in Gurugram this month, marking a significant step in its retail expansion strategy within the competitive luxury electric vehicle market.

Key Takeaways

  • Tesla’s first full-fledged Indian centre opens in Gurugram this month
  • Early Model Y sales show strong traction despite premium pricing
  • New India head Sharad Agarwal brings luxury automotive expertise
  • German rivals currently dominate 80% of luxury EV market

Strategic India Push Amid Global Challenges

The Gurugram centre launch comes as Tesla faces global headwinds, including slowing demand in China and cautious investors, making India a higher strategic priority. This follows the earlier establishment of experience centres in Mumbai and Delhi.

India became Tesla’s 50th global market with the introduction of two fully imported Model Y variants, priced from ₹59.89 lakh onwards. Despite a 70% import duty making the India-bound Model Y approximately 30% more expensive than US prices, early market response has been promising.

According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Association data reflected on the Vahan portal, Tesla registered 104 retail units during September and October.

Leadership and Market Competition

Tesla has appointed Sharad Agarwal as its new India head, bringing nearly a decade of luxury automotive experience from leadership roles at Lamborghini India and Audi India. His appointment signals Tesla’s intent to challenge German rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which currently command almost 80% of luxury EV sales in India.

The timing is critical as Tesla’s global sales grew just 7% year-on-year to 497,100 units in the September quarter, while China deliveries dropped to a three-year low of 26,006 units in October.

Competition in India’s premium EV segment is intensifying, with Tesla facing rivals including the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6, and BYD Sealion 7. This segment recorded sales of 460-480 units in October alone, indicating growing market potential.
