Gujarat Groom Murders Bride Over Saree Dispute Before Wedding

Gujarat Groom Murders Bride Over Saree Dispute Hours Before Wedding

A wedding celebration in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar turned into a tragedy when the groom brutally murdered his bride-to-be just one hour before their ceremony over a petty argument about a saree and money.

Key Takeaways

  • Groom Sajan Baraiya killed bride Soni Himmat Rathod with an iron pipe
  • Murder occurred just 60 minutes before wedding ceremony in Bhavnagar
  • Couple had been living together for 1.5 years despite family objections
  • Police hunting for accused who fled after the crime

From Wedding Preparations to Crime Scene

The baraat was expected any minute at the wedding venue in Bhavnagar’s Prabhas Lake area. Relatives had gathered, the mandap stood ready, and Soni was preparing to begin her new life. Instead, she was murdered by the man she was about to marry.

A Relationship That Defied Odds

Sajan Baraiya and Soni had been living together for approximately eighteen months at Tekri Chowk. Despite family objections to their relationship, the couple remained committed. They had completed their engagement and most wedding rituals, with Saturday night scheduled as their official wedding ceremony.

Deadly Argument Over Trivial Matters

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police RR Singhal, the fatal confrontation began with a dispute about a saree and some money. What should have been a minor argument escalated violently when Sajan entered a rage, picked up an iron pipe, and attacked Soni. He then slammed her head against a wall, killing her instantly.

Crime Scene and Aftermath

After the murder, Sajan ransacked the house before fleeing the scene. When Gangajalia police arrived, they discovered a crime scene where wedding celebrations were supposed to occur – Soni’s body lying amidst meaningless decorations.

Police Investigation Underway

Soni’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a murder case and are searching for the absconding Sajan. Investigators also confirmed the accused had a separate altercation with a neighbor earlier on Saturday, for which a complaint was filed.

Local residents struggle to comprehend the tragedy, particularly since Sajan had stood by Soni for over a year despite family opposition and was moments away from marrying her. The wedding mandap now stands as a grim reminder of unanswered questions and a family in mourning.
