Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Kolkata Test With Neck Injury

Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Kolkata Test With Neck Injury

India captain Shubman Gill has been officially ruled out of the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Kolkata due to a neck injury sustained during day two of the match.

Key Match Developments

The BCCI confirmed before day three that Gill will not be available to bat in India’s second innings. The injury occurred while he was batting on Saturday, forcing him to retire hurt on 4 not out.

Team management stated: “Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.”

Injury Incident Details

Gill felt immediate neck pain after playing a sweep shot for four runs against South African spinner Simon Harmer. He received on-field treatment before leaving the field.

Later that evening, he was stretchered into an ambulance with his neck immobilized and admitted to a Kolkata hospital.

Leadership Changes

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who took over leadership during Gill’s absence on Saturday, will continue to captain the team for the remainder of the Test match.

Coach’s Perspective

India’s assistant coach Morne Morkel suggested the injury might be unrelated to workload. “Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night’s sleep. I don’t think it’s, or we can put it down to the (work) load,” Morkel told reporters.

Gill remains one of India’s key multi-format players, having recently returned to T20 cricket during the Asia Cup in September and being appointed ODI captain ahead of the Australia series.
