Google’s New AI Shopping Tools Can Call Stores and Buy Products For You

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s new AI shopping features can call stores, compare products, and even make purchases for you.
  • Updates span Search, the Gemini app, and automated tools to simplify holiday shopping.
  • All features are currently rolling out in the United States, with more regions expected later.

Google has launched a comprehensive suite of AI-powered shopping tools designed to streamline both online and in-store purchases ahead of the busy holiday season. Announced on Friday, these updates span across Google Search, the Gemini app, and new automated agents that can handle tasks from product comparison to completing transactions.

Conversational Shopping in AI Search

Google’s most significant enhancement comes to AI Mode in Search, where users can now describe what they need using natural language. The system generates organized responses that consolidate product visuals, pricing, reviews, and stock availability in a single view.

For shoppers seeking inspiration, the AI provides image-based suggestions. Those comparing specific items receive structured tables highlighting details like texture, finish, and reviewer insights. All results leverage Google’s Shopping Graph, which tracks over 50 billion product listings with millions updated hourly.

Shopping Support Built into Gemini App

The Gemini app in the United States now integrates Shopping Graph-powered capabilities. Users can request gift ideas, create shopping lists, or compare products directly within conversations without switching between applications. The app displays shoppable product cards, price comparisons, and direct retailer links within the chat interface.

AI That Calls Stores to Check Inventory

For local shopping, Google introduces an AI feature that can telephone nearby stores to verify product availability and pricing. When users search for “near me” products, they’ll see an option allowing Google to contact retailers on their behalf.

The system employs Duplex technology enhanced by larger Gemini models to determine which stores to call, formulate appropriate questions, and summarize responses. Shoppers receive results via email or text, accompanied by relevant local inventory data from the Shopping Graph. This feature is initially available in the U.S. for electronics, toys, and beauty products.

Automated Checkout and Price Tracking

Google is rolling out an automated checkout option integrated with its price tracking tool. After users specify their desired item, size, color, and spending limit, they’ll receive alerts when prices drop within their budget. For participating merchants, Google can complete purchases using Google Pay—but only after user confirmation.

The checkout feature is beginning to appear in Search and AI Mode for select U.S. retailers including Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and participating Shopify sellers.

Reducing Holiday Shopping Friction

These innovations aim to eliminate repetitive shopping tasks like sifting through endless product lists, monitoring price fluctuations, and calling stores for stock checks. The updates are gradually rolling out across the United States, with expansion to additional regions and retailers expected in the future.
