Global Commute Study Reveals Average Travel Time is 68 Minutes Daily

Global Commute Study Reveals Surprising Travel Patterns

A groundbreaking international study has found that people worldwide spend remarkably similar amounts of time traveling each day, regardless of their location or economic status. The research reveals the average person dedicates 1 hour 8 minutes daily to travel activities.

Key Takeaways

  • Global average daily travel time: 1 hour 8 minutes
  • Morocco has shortest travel time (48 minutes)
  • South Korea has longest travel time (1 hour 48 minutes)
  • UK average: 1 hour 27 minutes; US average: 1 hour 21 minutes

Global Travel Time Rankings

The comprehensive analysis of 43 countries representing over half the world’s population uncovered striking patterns in daily mobility. Morocco residents enjoy the briefest travel durations at just 48 minutes daily, followed by Algeria, Mexico, India, and Mauritius.

At the opposite end, South Koreans spend the most time traveling at 1 hour 48 minutes on average. Latvia, Luxembourg, Tunisia, and Brazil complete the top five countries with longest travel times.

Universal Travel Patterns

Across all populations studied, daily travel time averaged 1.3 hours (1 hour 18 minutes) with minimal variation. “The most important finding is that people don’t travel less when speed or efficiency increases,” explained study author Eric Galbraith. “Instead, they travel farther.”

This suggests that improved transportation infrastructure doesn’t necessarily reduce time spent traveling but enables people to cover greater distances within similar timeframes.

Broader Time-Use Context

The travel study follows earlier research from McGill University examining how people allocate time throughout their day. The previous analysis of 58 countries found:

  • Sleep: 9 hours
  • Leisure activities: 6.5 hours
  • Personal care and health: 2.5 hours
  • Work: 2.6 hours
  • Meal preparation: 55 minutes

“We found that the single largest chunk of time is really focused on humans ourselves, a little more than nine hours,” Galbraith noted. “Most of this—about 6.5 hours—is doing things that we enjoy, like hanging out, watching TV, socializing and doing sports.”
