Valve Announces Steam Machine Console, Frame VR Headset for 2026

Valve Announces Major Hardware Return with Steam Machine, Frame VR Headset and Controller

Valve has made a dramatic return to hardware with three new gaming devices set to launch in Spring 2026. The company announced a new Steam Machine console, next-generation Steam Controller, and Steam Frame VR headset – marking its biggest hardware push since 2015.

Key Takeaways

  • Three new Valve devices launching Spring 2026
  • Steam Machine offers PC performance in console form
  • Frame VR headset combines standalone and PC-powered VR
  • Steam Controller returns with cross-platform compatibility
  • All devices available for wishlisting on Steam Hardware pages

Steam Machine: Console Simplicity Meets PC Power

The new Steam Machine bridges the gap between PC gaming and console convenience. This compact device boots like a console but delivers full PC-grade performance with AMD Zen 4 processor and RDNA3 GPU capable of 4K gaming at 60 FPS with ray tracing.

Available in 512GB and 2TB configurations, the system runs SteamOS and features 16GB DDR5 RAM, 8GB GDDR6 VRAM, and comprehensive connectivity including Wi-Fi 6E and Ethernet. Valve claims it’s six times more powerful than the Steam Deck.

Revamped Steam Controller for Modern Gaming

The returning Steam Controller now supports multiple platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck, and the new Frame VR system. It features magnetic thumbsticks, HD haptics, capacitive touch sensors, and gyro controls.

With over 35 hours of battery life and assignable grip buttons, the controller maintains PC-like precision for strategy games and shooters without requiring keyboard input.

Steam Frame VR: Standalone Freedom with PC Depth

Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset targets gamers who want both standalone convenience and PC-powered VR experiences. Powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 16GB unified RAM, it delivers high-performance VR workloads.

The device features 2,160 × 2,160 LCD panels per eye with refresh rates up to 120Hz (experimental 144Hz mode), custom pancake lenses, and inside-out tracking with eye-tracking for foveated rendering. Weighing just 430 grams complete, it’s among the lightest premium VR headsets.

Pricing and Availability

While Valve hasn’t confirmed pricing, community speculation places the Steam Machine between $800-$1000 and the Frame VR headset around $1000. The company is currently avoiding price discussions and hasn’t confirmed controller bundling arrangements.

All three devices will roll out globally in early 2026, with Steam Hardware pages already active for wishlisting.

The gaming hardware market continues evolving toward hybrid solutions, with Valve’s re-entry signaling confidence in bringing PC-level performance to living rooms without complexity.
