Jaishankar Meets US Secretary Rubio at G7, Discusses Trade Deal Progress

Key Takeaways

  • Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held bilateral talks at G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
  • Discussions focused on trade, supply chains, and ongoing India-US trade negotiations
  • Meeting occurred amid progress toward new trade agreement between the two nations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara. The high-level discussion centered on strengthening bilateral relations between India and the United States.

In a social media post, Jaishankar stated: “Good to meet @SecRubio this morning at #G7 FMM. Appreciate his condolences on the loss of lives in the blast in Delhi.”

The minister confirmed they “discussed our bilateral ties, focusing on trade and supply chains,” highlighting the economic dimension of their talks.

Expanded Diplomatic Outreach

Jaishankar’s meeting with Rubio formed part of India’s extensive diplomatic engagements at the G7 forum. On Tuesday, he held separate discussions with foreign ministers from Canada, Mexico, France, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

India participated in the meeting as an invited partner under Canada’s presidency, alongside other nations including Brazil, Australia, and South Korea.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that Jaishankar’s presence demonstrates India’s “continued commitment to working with international partners in addressing global challenges and bolstering the voice of the Global South in international fora.”

Trade Negotiations Progress

The Jaishankar-Rubio meeting gains significance amid ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States. US President Donald Trump recently indicated both countries are nearing completion of a new trade agreement.

“We are making a deal with India, a much different deal than we had in the past. We’re getting a fair deal, just a fair trade deal. We’re getting close… I think we’re pretty close to doing a deal that’s good for everybody,” Trump stated during the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor as the new US ambassador to India.

This marked the second meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio within a month, following President Trump’s announcement of a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports. The tariff issue has remained central to bilateral trade discussions.
