India-US Trade Deal: Piyush Goyal Confirms Progress on Balanced Agreement

India-US Trade Deal Progressing Well, Says Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has stated that India is working towards a “fair, equitable and balanced” trade agreement with the United States while preparing for “every contingency.” The minister emphasized that national interest remains the top priority in finalizing the deal.

Key Developments

  • Trade talks between India and US are progressing well
  • Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) will be comprehensive and WTO-compliant
  • Another round of negotiations may not be required
  • Deal aims to boost trade from $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030

Minister’s Statement

Speaking at the Udyog Samagam-2025 in New Delhi, Goyal revealed: “We are of course trying to work out a fair, equitable and balanced trade deal. If that happens, it could happen any day. It could happen tomorrow. It may happen next month. It may happen next year. But as a government, we are preparing for every contingency.”

Sensitive Negotiations

Government sources confirmed that negotiations are being conducted while keeping sensitive issues and sectors in mind. Goyal had earlier acknowledged that while talks are “going on very well,” there are “many sensitive and serious issues” that naturally take time to resolve.

Recent Tariff Developments

The trade negotiations come against the backdrop of recent tariff impositions by the US. President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods effective August 1, followed by another 25 per cent tariff days later, bringing the total to 50 per cent, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil.

The ambitious BTA, formally proposed in February, represents a significant step in India-US economic relations with its target to more than double bilateral trade volumes by 2030.
