India’s DigiLocker to Get AI eKYC and Global Verification

India’s DigiLocker to Get AI-Based eKYC and Global Verification

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has announced major upgrades to the DigiLocker platform, including AI-powered eKYC and global credential verification capabilities. This transformation positions DigiLocker as a global model for paperless governance and secure digital services.

Key Developments

  • AI-based eKYC system for enhanced identity verification
  • Global credential verification for international acceptance
  • Platform evolution from document storage to trust infrastructure
  • Seven states recognized as “DigiLocker Accelerators”

Building a Digital Trust Ecosystem

The National Conference on DigiLocker highlighted how the platform has become fundamental to government, education, and industry sectors. It enables paperless governance, inclusive education, and secure digital interactions across ministries and departments.

“DigiLocker serves as the trust layer connecting citizens, ministries, and departments—enabling secure, interoperable, and accountable digital governance. Our vision is a future where every digital interaction is trusted, every citizen empowered, and every institution accountable” said S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, who chaired the conference.

Krishnan emphasized that DigiLocker represents India’s progression from basic digital connectivity to building trusted digital capabilities and self-reliance.

State-Level Implementation Success

Seven states—Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Mizoram—received “DigiLocker Accelerator” recognition for their outstanding achievements in platform integration.

Notable implementations include Maharashtra’s integration with Pension and Treasury systems, and Assam’s connection of over 500 services through the Sewa Setu Portal.

DigiLocker continues to provide citizens with secure access to digital IDs, financial credentials, and certificates, now expanding its capabilities with advanced AI and global verification features.
