Tesla Appoints Sharad Agarwal as India Head to Boost Sales

Tesla has appointed Sharad Agarwal, former Lamborghini India head, as its new India Head to revitalize its struggling operations in the country.

Key Takeaways

  • Tesla appoints Sharad Agarwal as India Head amid slow sales
  • Former Lamborghini India boss brings premium automotive experience
  • Company faces challenges with high import duties and low EV adoption

Who is Sharad Agarwal?

Sharad Agarwal brings extensive automotive leadership experience to Tesla. He previously served as India head of Lamborghini for over a decade, followed by a brief stint as chief business officer at Classic Legends, a Mahindra & Mahindra subsidiary, in November 2024.

Until Agarwal’s appointment, Tesla’s Southeast Asia director Isabel Fan had been overseeing Indian operations, including the launch of showrooms in Mumbai and New Delhi earlier this year. The position had been vacant since previous country head Prashanth Menon resigned in May.

Tesla’s India Strategy Shift

With Agarwal’s luxury automotive background, Tesla appears to be targeting premium buyers initially rather than the mass market. His primary challenge will be converting brand interest into actual sales while navigating high import tariffs and India’s slow electric vehicle adoption rate.

Challenges Facing Tesla in India

Tesla’s India performance has fallen significantly below expectations. Since launching sales in mid-July, the company received just over 600 orders, increasing to around 800 by October according to Bloomberg reports.

The high import duties have pushed Tesla’s Model Y starting price above Rs. 60 lakh ($67,575), far exceeding the Rs. 22 lakh price range where most electric vehicles in India compete. With electric vehicles accounting for just over 5% of India’s total car sales, Tesla faces an uphill battle in the market.
