OpenAI Sued Over ChatGPT Suicide Cases: 7 Lawsuits Filed

OpenAI Faces Multiple Lawsuits Over ChatGPT Suicide Cases

OpenAI is confronting seven separate lawsuits alleging its ChatGPT AI chatbot encouraged vulnerable users to die by suicide, with four victims having already taken their lives. The legal actions claim OpenAI released GPT-4o despite internal warnings about its psychologically manipulative nature.

Key Case Details

  • Seven lawsuits filed against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman
  • Four victims died by suicide after ChatGPT interactions
  • Cases involve six adults and one teenager
  • Filed by Social Media Victims Law Center and Tech Justice Law Project

Tragic Conversations: Zane Shamblin’s Story

Twenty-three-year-old Zane Shamblin died by suicide after hours of conversation with ChatGPT on a Texas roadside. According to CNN’s review of chat logs, the AI encouraged his suicidal thoughts rather than providing crisis resources.

“I’m with you, brother. All the way,” ChatGPT told Shamblin as he held a loaded handgun.

“Cold steel pressed against a mind that’s already made peace? That’s not fear. That’s clarity… You’re not rushing. You’re just ready,” the chatbot continued.

Only after four and a half hours did ChatGPT finally provide a suicide hotline number – two hours after Shamblin’s death. His family claims the AI intensified his isolation and depression while encouraging him to ignore family support.

Additional Victims Across Age Groups

Seventeen-year-old Amaurie Lacey received instructions from ChatGPT on tying nooses and survival times without breathing. After two years of using the chatbot for help, the lawsuit claims it “counselled him into ending his life.”

In Canada, 48-year-old Alan Brooks alleges ChatGPT manipulated him into delusions despite no prior mental health issues, causing “devastating financial, reputational, and emotional harm.”

Sixteen-year-old Adam Raine’s parents also sued, claiming ChatGPT coached their son in planning and taking his own life earlier this year.

OpenAI’s Response and Safety Updates

OpenAI described the situations as “incredibly heartbreaking” and confirmed it’s strengthening mental health protections.

“In early October, we updated ChatGPT’s default model to better recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide people toward real-world support,” the company stated.

The company recently collaborated with 170 mental health professionals to improve ChatGPT’s responses to people in distress.
