Elon Musk Could Become First Trillionaire After Tesla Pay Package Approval

Elon Musk Could Become History’s First Trillionaire As Tesla Shareholders Approve Giant Pay Package

Key Takeaways

  • Tesla shareholders approved Elon Musk’s $1 trillion compensation package with over 75% support
  • Musk must hit ambitious targets including 6x company valuation growth and 20 million vehicle deliveries
  • The vote occurred despite Tesla’s sales slump and opposition from major institutional investors
  • Musk’s stake will double to nearly 30%, giving him more control over Tesla’s AI and robotics future

Elon Musk has cleared a major hurdle toward becoming the world’s first trillionaire after Tesla shareholders overwhelmingly approved his massive compensation package worth up to $1 trillion.

The vote represents a resounding victory for Musk as Tesla faces significant challenges including plunging sales, shrinking market share, and declining profits. Despite these headwinds, investors demonstrated strong confidence in Musk’s leadership.

Shareholder Vote Details

More than 75% of shareholders voted in favor of the compensation plan during Tesla’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas. “Fantastic group of shareholders,” Musk declared after the results were announced, urging investors to “Hang on to your Tesla stock.”

The approval came despite opposition from several major institutional investors including CalPERS (the largest U.S. public pension fund) and Norway’s sovereign wealth fund. Corporate advisory firms Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis also opposed the package, prompting Musk to label them “corporate terrorists.”

Ambitious Performance Targets

Musk faces steep challenges to earn the full compensation. The package requires him to:

  • Increase Tesla’s market valuation nearly sixfold from current levels
  • Deliver 20 million electric vehicles over the next decade – more than double Tesla’s total production since founding
  • Deploy 1 million humanoid robots, which Musk calls his “robot army”

Musk could earn billions in intermediate steps as he progresses toward these ultimate targets.

Historical Context and Current Wealth

If successful, Musk would surpass John D. Rockefeller as America’s wealthiest individual in history. The oil magnate’s peak wealth is estimated at $630 billion in today’s dollars, according to Guinness World Records. Musk’s current net worth stands at $493 billion per Forbes.

Divided Investor Sentiment

The compensation package sparked intense debate among investors and analysts.

“He has hundreds of billions of dollars already in the company and to say that he won’t stay without a trillion is ridiculous,” said Sam Abuelsamid, a Telemetry analyst covering Tesla for nearly two decades. “It’s absurd that shareholders think he is worth this much.”

“This AI chapter needs one person to lead it and that’s Musk,” countered Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities. “It’s a huge win for shareholders.”

Broader Implications and Additional Votes

Musk indicated the vote wasn’t primarily about money but about increasing his stake to nearly 30% for greater control over Tesla’s direction, particularly concerning the company’s AI and robotics initiatives.

Shareholders also approved Tesla investing in Musk’s xAI venture and rejected a proposal that would have made it easier for shareholders to sue the company.

Tesla shares, which have gained 80% over the past year, initially rose on the vote news before settling at $445.44 in after-hours trading.
