Starlink to Launch Satellite Internet in India via Maharashtra Partnership

Key Takeaways

  • Maharashtra becomes first Indian state to partner with Starlink for satellite broadband
  • Remote districts like Gadchiroli and Nandurbar prioritized for connectivity
  • Commercial launch expected in Q1 2026 with Rs 30,000 setup cost

Elon Musk’s Starlink is set to launch satellite broadband services in India, with Maharashtra becoming the first state to officially partner with the company. The state government signed a Letter of Intent to deploy Starlink’s low-earth-orbit satellite network across the state.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The initiative aims to provide high-speed internet access to underserved and remote areas, enabling better education, healthcare, and e-governance services. This addresses connectivity gaps where traditional networks have struggled to deliver consistent service.

According to PTI reports, the agreement will kickstart deployment across government institutions, public infrastructure, and rural communities. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that districts including Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv will be prioritized during the initial rollout.

Official Statement

The Chief Minister’s Office stated on X: “With Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, Maharashtra takes a bold leap forward in bridging the last digital divide, powering education, healthcare, and connectivity in every corner of our state.”

Technical Readiness and Infrastructure

Starlink has already conducted successful technology demonstrations in Mumbai during trial runs on October 30-31, confirming compliance with Indian security and technical standards. The company plans to establish nine gateway earth stations across major cities including Mumbai, Noida, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Lucknow.

Once fully operational, the Gen 1 satellite constellation is expected to deliver aggregate broadband speeds reaching 600 Gbps.

Launch Timeline and Pricing

Starlink is currently assembling its India team and completing regulatory clearances. If approvals proceed as planned, commercial services are expected to launch in the first quarter of 2026.

Early reports indicate a one-time setup cost of approximately Rs 30,000, with monthly subscription plans starting at Rs 3,000. Pricing will vary based on speed tiers and usage requirements.
