In a landmark achievement for India’s cooperative movement, Amul and IFFCO have secured the first and second positions respectively in the global ranking of top cooperatives. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah hailed this as a proud moment, recognizing the contributions of millions of farmers and women.

About the World Cooperative Monitor

The ranking comes from the World Cooperative Monitor (WCM), published annually by the International Cooperative Alliance in partnership with European research institute Euricse. The list evaluates the world’s 300 largest cooperatives based on two key parameters:

  • Annual turnover
  • Turnover compared to GDP per capita

The monitor aims to highlight cooperatives’ significant economic contributions to their national economies.

Amul: India’s Dairy Powerhouse

Amul (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited) stands as India’s largest dairy cooperative. Founded in 1946, it now connects with over 3.6 million milk producers and processes millions of liters of milk daily. Operating on the principle of “Every Farmer, an Owner,” Amul has become the backbone of India’s White Revolution and exports to more than 50 countries.

IFFCO: Serving Indian Farmers

IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited) is India’s largest multi-state cooperative. Established in 1967, it serves farmers through 35,000+ affiliated cooperative societies. Beyond fertilizer production, IFFCO leads in digital rural services, sustainable farming initiatives, and climate-friendly agricultural projects.
