Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has arrived in Auckland to accelerate Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks with New Zealand. He will meet his counterpart, Todd McClay, to review the progress of the ongoing negotiations.

“Delighted to be in New Zealand to review the progress of the ongoing FTA (Free Trade Agreement) negotiation,” Mr. Goyal stated on X. He emphasized that both nations aim to “expedite the process for a comprehensive, mutually beneficial economic partnership.” The Minister also plans to meet industry leaders and investors to explore new collaboration and investment opportunities.

Current Negotiation Status

The fourth round of India-New Zealand FTA negotiations began in Auckland on November 3, 2025. These talks were formally launched on March 16, 2025, signaling a renewed push for deeper economic ties.

India-New Zealand merchandise trade reached $1.3 billion in 2024-25, marking a significant 49% growth from the previous year.

India’s Exports to New Zealand: Key exports include pharmaceuticals, refined petrol, textiles, agricultural machinery, automobiles, iron and steel, electronics, shrimps, diamonds, and basmati rice.

India’s Imports from New Zealand: Major imports comprise agricultural products, apples, kiwifruit, lamb, mutton, dairy products, coking coal, timber, wool, and scrap metals.
