India to Become GitHub’s Largest Developer Hub by 2030

India Set to Become GitHub’s Largest Developer Hub by 2030

India is GitHub’s fastest-growing market and is projected to surpass the United States with over 57.5 million users by 2030. With 21.9 million developers, it’s already the world’s second-largest developer community.

Key Takeaways

  • India to overtake US as GitHub’s largest user base by 2030
  • GitHub Copilot now has 20 million users, generating more revenue than GitHub did at acquisition
  • Platform added 36 million users after making Copilot free in 2024
  • GitHub transitioning to AI-native development platform

India-First Strategy and Enterprise Adoption

GitHub is deepening its India-first approach through student initiatives and startup support programs. According to COO Kyle Daigle, Indian IT services giants including Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and Accenture are leading global AI co-creation efforts.

These companies are establishing centers of excellence around GitHub Copilot and conducting internal innovation drives with hackathons and AI agent trials.

From Code Hosting to AI Powerhouse

Since Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition in 2018, GitHub has transformed into a comprehensive AI development platform. The company’s AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot, now serves 20 million users and generates more revenue than GitHub’s entire business at the time of acquisition.

Following Copilot becoming free for all users in December 2024, GitHub added 36 million users in 2025, reaching a total user base of 180 million globally.

Leadership Transition and AI Vision

GitHub is undergoing leadership changes with Thomas Dohmke stepping down as CEO this August. The platform will join Microsoft’s CoreAI division under Jay Parikh, former global head of engineering at Meta.

Daigle emphasized that GitHub’s next phase will focus on AI-native software development, where intelligent agents manage everything from code generation to testing and deployment.

Why AI Won’t Replace Developers

In a recent interview, Dohmke challenged the notion that AI would eliminate tech jobs. “The companies that are the smartest are going to hire more developers,” he stated. “Because if you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x.”

He described artificial intelligence as a multiplier rather than a subtractive force, debunking myths that AI alone can build billion-dollar businesses without coding expertise.

“The idea that AI without any coding skills lets you just build a billion-dollar business is mistaken,” Dohmke said. “Because if that were the case, everyone would do it.” His message reinforces that AI is a remarkable tool, not a magic wand.
