ISRO Begins Countdown for Heaviest Military Satellite CMS-03 Launch

Key Takeaways

  • ISRO begins countdown for its heaviest satellite launch (4,400 kg) from Indian soil.
  • Military communications satellite CMS-03 (GSAT-7R) to replace aging GSAT-7 for the Indian Navy.
  • Launch via LVM3 rocket to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit; enhances secure naval and strategic communications.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has started the final countdown for the launch of its advanced military communications satellite, CMS-03. The launch will take place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Weighing 4,400 kg, CMS-03 is the heaviest satellite ever to be launched from India. It will be placed into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by ISRO’s reliable Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3).

“Countdown Commences! Final preparations complete and the countdown for #LVM3M5 has officially begun at SDSC-SHAR,” ISRO announced on its X handle on Saturday evening.”All systems are GO as we move closer to liftoff!”

Mission and Rocket Details

This mission marks the eighth flight and fifth operational mission for the LVM3 rocket, which maintains a 100% success record. The rocket previously launched the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission, which made India the first country to land near the lunar south pole.

Satellite Capabilities and Purpose

CMS-03 is a multi-band communication satellite designed to provide services across a wide oceanic region, including the Indian landmass. Its payload features transponders for voice, data, and video links over C, extended C, and Ku bands.

Built primarily for the Indian Navy, CMS-03 (also called GSAT-7R) will replace the GSAT-7 satellite, which has been in service since September 2013. A contract worth Rs 1,589 crore for the project was signed between ISRO and the Indian Navy in June 2019.

Strategic and Civilian Benefits

The new satellite will significantly enhance connectivity, providing sharper, higher-capacity bandwidth and improved digital access to remote territories. This will benefit both civilian agencies and strategic applications.

For defence, CMS-03 will upgrade communications by enabling secure and reliable transmission of voice, data, and video across different regions. It will also establish secure communication links between naval ships, aircraft, and shore-based installations, strengthening India’s maritime security.
