Trump-Xi Summit: High-Stakes Trade Talks Set for South Korea
US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will meet for a crucial summit in South Korea on Thursday, aiming to resolve a protracted trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
Key Issues at Stake:
- Looming November 10 deadline for trade truce
- Potential 100% tariffs on Chinese goods
- Rare earth export controls and technology restrictions
- American soybean exports and China-Russia energy deals
Tensions escalated recently with Washington expanding export controls and Beijing tightening rare earth export curbs. This prompted President Trump to threaten new 100% tariffs on Chinese goods effective November 1.
However, both nations showed progress during weekend trade talks in Malaysia, setting the stage for this first in-person meeting between the leaders since Trump returned to the White House in January. Their last meeting was at the 2019 G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.
The conflict has expanded from initially targeting fentanyl flows to encompass broader economic issues including rare earths, technology controls, and agricultural exports.
