Amazon Confirms 14,000 Job Cuts Globally; India Impact Revealed

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon confirms 14,000 corporate job cuts globally, about 4% of its corporate workforce.
  • India may see 800-1,000 corporate employees affected, according to reports.
  • Laid-off staff will get 90 days for internal roles, severance pay, and benefits.
  • CEO Andy Jassy cites AI-driven restructuring for leaner operations.

Amazon has officially announced a major workforce reduction, confirming plans to cut approximately 14,000 corporate jobs worldwide. This represents about 4% of its global corporate workforce and marks a significant strategic shift as the company intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence.

The layoffs, while substantial, are lower than earlier speculation of nearly 30,000 job cuts. Amazon employs about 1.55 million people globally, with around 350,000 in corporate roles.

Why Is Amazon Cutting Jobs?

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, confirmed the job cuts in a blog post. She stated the move aims to streamline operations, reduce management layers, and redirect resources toward key projects and customer priorities.

“While this will include reducing in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles,” Galetti wrote.

The restructuring comes despite strong company performance, driven by the need to adapt to rapid AI advancements. Galetti explained, “We’re convinced that we need to be organized more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business.”

Support for Affected Employees

Amazon has outlined comprehensive support measures for impacted staff:

  • 90-day period to explore internal job opportunities
  • Recruitment teams will prioritize internal hires
  • Severance packages for those not securing new roles
  • Continued health benefits and outplacement services

Impact on Indian Operations

As Amazon implements global layoffs, employees in the US, Canada, and Europe are already receiving notifications. In India, reports from Economic Times suggest between 800 to 1,000 corporate employees could be affected by the workforce reduction.

The company’s AWS, Prime Video, and Twitch divisions are expected to be among the most impacted areas globally.
