Amazon Plans 30,000 Job Cuts in Largest Corporate Layoff Ever

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon plans to cut 30,000 corporate jobs, its largest-ever corporate layoff
  • Layoffs affect nearly 10% of corporate workforce across multiple divisions
  • Company cites pandemic overhiring and expense reduction as key drivers
  • Previous cost-cutting measures, including return-to-office policy, proved insufficient

Amazon is preparing to eliminate approximately 30,000 corporate positions starting Tuesday, marking the largest workforce reduction in the company’s history. The cuts represent nearly 10% of Amazon’s corporate employees and surpass the 27,000 jobs eliminated during the 2022-2023 layoffs.

Which Departments Are Affected?

The layoffs are expected to impact several key divisions, including:

  • Human Resources (People Experience and Technology)
  • Operations
  • Devices and Services
  • Amazon Web Services

According to Reuters sources, managers completed special training on Monday to prepare for communicating the layoff decisions to their teams. Email notifications are scheduled to go out Tuesday morning.

Background: Pandemic Overhiring and Cost-Cutting Measures

Sources indicate Amazon has been working to correct overhiring that occurred during the pandemic-driven demand surge. The company had previously implemented several cost-reduction strategies, including:

  • A strict return-to-office mandate
  • An efficiency identification program
  • Integration of artificial intelligence technologies

Earlier Efficiency Initiatives

Earlier this year, CEO Andy Jassy launched an anonymous complaint line to identify management inefficiencies. The program generated approximately 1,500 responses and led to more than 450 process changes.

The full-time return-to-office mandate was reportedly intended to prompt voluntary resignations, reducing headcount without severance costs. However, sources told Reuters the policy didn’t produce enough departures, contributing to the need for larger-scale layoffs.

AI’s Role in Future Workforce Changes

In June, Jassy acknowledged that artificial intelligence would drive further job reductions. “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy said about Generative AI.

Broader Tech Industry Context

The Amazon layoffs occur amid widespread job cuts across the technology sector. According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 200 tech companies have eliminated approximately 98,000 positions this year, including:

  • Intel: 27,000 employees
  • Microsoft: 15,000 positions
  • Salesforce: Over 9,000 workforce reduction
  • Meta: Roughly 4,000 jobs
  • Google: 200 positions
