Amazon Plans Up to 30,000 Corporate Job Cuts Starting Tuesday

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon plans to cut up to 30,000 corporate jobs starting Tuesday
  • This represents nearly 10% of Amazon’s corporate workforce
  • Would be the largest job cut since 27,000 positions were eliminated in late 2022

Amazon is preparing to eliminate as many as 30,000 corporate positions beginning Tuesday, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The massive workforce reduction comes as the company aims to reduce expenses and address over-hiring that occurred during peak pandemic demand.

The planned cuts would affect approximately 10% of Amazon’s roughly 350,000 corporate employees, though this represents a small percentage of the company’s total 1.55 million workforce. If implemented, this would mark Amazon’s largest job reduction since approximately 27,000 positions were cut starting in late 2022.

Division-Wide Impact

Amazon has been conducting smaller-scale job cuts across various divisions over the past two years, including devices, communications, and podcasting departments. This week’s broader reductions are expected to impact multiple divisions, including human resources (known as People Experience and Technology), devices and services, and operations, among others.

Implementation Timeline

Managers of affected teams underwent training on Monday to prepare for communicating with staff following the job cut notifications. The notifications are scheduled to begin going out via email on Tuesday morning.

Amazon shares rose 1.5% to $227.53 following the news. The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter earnings on Thursday. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the planned job cuts.
