India’s Electronics Exports Set to Become 2nd Largest Category

Key Takeaways

  • Electronics exports surged 42% YoY to $22.2 billion in H1 FY26.
  • The sector is now India’s third-largest and fastest-growing export category.
  • Apple iPhone shipments contributed to nearly half of the electronics export value.

India’s electronics exports are on track to become the country’s second-largest export category, as announced by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The sector has demonstrated remarkable growth, climbing to become the third-largest and fastest-growing export category in the first half of the fiscal year 2026.

Minister’s Announcement and Growth Metrics

Minister Vaishnaw shared the news on social media platform X, stating, “Make in India impact! Electronics become the country’s third largest and fastest-growing export category in the first six months of FY26. On course to be the second largest exported item.”

Official data reveals a 42% year-on-year increase in electronics exports, reaching $22.2 billion in H1 FY26. A significant portion, approximately half, of this value is attributed to shipments. The sector’s ranking has improved dramatically, rising from seventh position in FY22 to its current third place.

Broader Export Performance and Smartphone Surge

Overall, India’s exports grew by 5.19% year-on-year to $346.1 billion between April and August 2025. This performance builds on a 7.1% growth in 2024, which surpassed the global average of 2.5%. Electronic goods were the standout performer, leading the surge with a 40.6% increase and adding $5.5 billion in value.

The success is largely driven by government initiatives like the (PLI) and ‘Make in India’ schemes, which have transformed India from a net importer to a net exporter of smartphones. Smartphone exports alone crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in the first five months of FY26, marking a robust 55% increase. In a single month, September, smartphone exports hit an estimated $1.8 billion, reflecting a massive year-on-year growth of over 95%.
