Indian Coffee Gains Global Popularity, PM Modi Highlights Regional Diversity

Indian Coffee Gains Global Recognition, PM Modi Highlights Regional Diversity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Indian coffee is experiencing growing international popularity, driven by diverse varieties cultivated across multiple states. During his 127th Mann ki Baat radio address, he emphasized that coffee cultivation is expanding in Northeast India, further strengthening the country’s global coffee identity.

Key Coffee Growing Regions

PM Modi specifically highlighted several prominent coffee-producing areas:

  • Karnataka: Chikmagalur, Coorg, and Hassan
  • Tamil Nadu: Pulney, Shevaroy, Nilgiri, and Annamalai regions
  • Kerala: Wayanad, Travancore, and Malabar areas
  • Odisha: Koraput region gaining recognition for Arabica coffee

“Indian coffee is becoming very popular all over the world. The diversity of Indian coffee is truly remarkable,” the Prime Minister said.

Production and Economic Impact

Karnataka dominates India’s coffee landscape, contributing approximately 70% of national production, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha represent emerging, non-traditional coffee cultivation areas.

The sector shows strong economic performance, with coffee exports increasing by 12.5% to reach USD 1.05 billion during April-September this fiscal year.

Social Transformation Through Coffee

PM Modi noted inspiring stories of professionals leaving corporate careers to pursue coffee cultivation passions. He also highlighted how coffee farming has positively transformed many women’s lives, creating new economic opportunities.

In Odisha, the Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation ensures comprehensive processing from procurement to marketing, supporting the state’s approximately 5,000 hectares of coffee cultivation, primarily focused on high-quality Arabica varieties.
