Women’s World Cup Security Intensified After Indore Harassment

Security Boosted for Women’s World Cup After Indore Incident

Security has been significantly intensified in Navi Mumbai for the remaining ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 matches, following a molestation incident involving two Australian players in Indore.

Key Takeaways

  • Two Australian cricketers were stalked and molested by a motorcycle-borne man in Indore.
  • The accused, Aqeel Khan, has been apprehended by Madhya Pradesh police.
  • Navi Mumbai authorities have deployed 600 security personnel and mandatory player escorts.

Indore Incident Details

The incident occurred on Thursday morning in the Khajrana Road area while the team was travelling from the Radisson Blu Hotel to a cafe. The Australian players immediately reported the matter to their team security officer, leading to a police complaint.

Enhanced Security Measures in Navi Mumbai

A senior police officer detailed the comprehensive security arrangements:

“Since October 18th, when practice started here, we have deployed guards at all hotels where women players are staying. We provide team escorts for all stadium-hotel travel and have deployed around 600 personnel at the ground,” said a senior Maharashtra Police officer in Navi Mumbai.

The officer emphasized that security personnel are available 24×7, but players must inform police before leaving hotels alone to ensure proper protection.

BCCI’s Strong Response

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the incident, stating:

“This is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts. We appreciate the swift action by Madhya Pradesh Police and will review our safety protocols to prevent recurrence.”

An FIR was registered under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking). The accused, Aqeel Khan, was traced after an eyewitness noted his motorcycle number. Police confirmed Khan had previous criminal cases registered against him.
