ASEAN Summit 2025: Trump Arrives as Modi, Xi Skip In-Person Meeting

ASEAN Summit 2025: Trump Arrives in Kuala Lumpur as Key Leaders Skip In-Person Attendance

Key Takeaways

  • US President Donald Trump arrives in Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit
  • PM Modi and President Xi skip in-person attendance, joining virtually
  • Timor-Leste officially becomes ASEAN’s 11th member
  • Trump to oversee Cambodia-Thailand peace deal signing

The 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit has commenced in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with US President Donald Trump’s arrival marking a significant moment amid notable absences from other global leaders.

Leadership Attendance and Notable Absences

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is hosting the three-day summit under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” While leaders from ASEAN member states and key partners are participating, two major figures are missing from the in-person proceedings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed PM Anwar during a call last week that he would join virtually due to Diwali celebrations in India. This means he will miss a potential meeting with President Trump, who is physically attending the summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has also skipped the ASEAN Summit, with Premier Li Qiang representing China in Kuala Lumpur. However, Trump and Xi are scheduled to hold a face-to-face meeting in South Korea on Thursday.

ASEAN Expansion and Regional Significance

In a historic development, Timor-Leste was officially inducted as ASEAN’s newest member on October 26, expanding the bloc to 11 countries. This marks the organization’s first expansion since the 1990s.

“Today, history is made,” PM Xanana Gusmao expressed. “For the people of Timor-Leste, this is not only a dream realised, but a powerful affirmation of our journey.”

The induction represents a crucial opportunity for Timor-Leste as it seeks to boost its struggling economy through regional integration.

Trump’s Asian Tour Agenda

President Trump’s visit to Malaysia is part of a three-nation Asian tour that will also include stops in Japan and South Korea. His agenda includes overseeing the signing of an expanded ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, following clashes over their disputed border earlier this year.

“The first message is Trump the peacemaker. The second is Trump the moneymaker,” Victor Cha of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told NBC News. “And then, with the meeting with China, I think what everybody’s expecting is that there’s probably not going to be a big trade deal, but there will be an effort to de-escalate or put a pause on the situation.”

Summit Highlights and Developments

The summit has already produced memorable moments, including a lighthearted dance between President Trump and Prime Minister Ibrahim. The White House Rapid Response account shared video of the interaction with the caption “TRUMP DANCE — MALAYSIA EDITION!”

Trump has proceeded to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center for a ceremony where leaders will sign the peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand, a significant diplomatic achievement for the region.

Other participating leaders include Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, along with from all ASEAN member states.
