Liverpool Slump to Fourth Straight Defeat in 3-2 Brentford Loss

Key Takeaways

  • Liverpool suffer fourth straight Premier League defeat, falling to sixth place
  • Brentford secure 3-2 victory with goals from Ouattara, Schade, and Thiago
  • Reds could trail leaders Arsenal by seven points after weekend fixtures
  • Liverpool have conceded 2+ goals in six of nine league matches this season

Liverpool’s alarming slump continued as they suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, falling 3-2 to Brentford in a dramatic encounter. The defending champions now face the prospect of being seven points adrift of league leaders Arsenal after another disjointed performance.

Match Breakdown

Brentford capitalized on Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities from the start. The opening goal came from Michael Kayode’s dangerous throw-in, with Kristoffer Ajer flicking on the delivery for Dango Ouattara to volley home.

Despite Liverpool’s attempts to respond, £100 million signing Florian Wirtz missed a crucial chance to score his first club goal, firing wide from inside the area. Brentford continued to pose the greater threat despite having less possession.

Mikkel Damsgaard created Brentford’s second with a brilliant through ball that sent Kevin Schade clear, leaving Ibrahima Konate trailing before firing past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool’s Brief Resurgence

Milos Kerkez gave Liverpool hope by converting Conor Bradley’s cross five minutes into first-half stoppage time, making it 2-1 at the break. The extended added time had frustrated Brentford, who expected only three minutes.

The home side regained their two-goal advantage when VAR awarded a penalty for Virgil van Dijk’s kick on Ouattara, which Igor Thiago converted.

Late Consolation

Mohamed Salah ended his six-game goal drought in spectacular fashion, controlling Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross and smashing it off the underside of the bar in the 89th minute. However, the late strike proved insufficient to prevent Liverpool’s fourth straight league defeat.

The result sees Brentford climb to 10th position while Liverpool slip to sixth, with their dramatic decline continuing since summer squad changes and the tragic loss of Diogo Jota in a July car accident.
