Stellantis Ex-CEO: Tesla May Not Exist in 10 Years Due to BYD

Stellantis Ex-CEO Predicts Tesla’s Demise Within a Decade

Former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has issued a stark warning, stating that Tesla may not survive the next 10 years due to intense competition from Chinese automaker BYD.

Key Takeaways

  • Carlos Tavares predicts Tesla may not exist in 10 years.
  • BYD’s efficiency and cost-effective vehicles are seen as the primary threat.
  • Elon Musk’s divided focus across multiple companies is cited as a risk factor.

The BYD Challenge

Tavares, in an interview with French newspaper Les Echos, highlighted that BYD has already overtaken Tesla in global EV sales. He attributed BYD’s success to superior efficiency and more affordable vehicles.

“I’m not sure that Tesla will still exist in 10 years. It’s an innovative group, but they’ll be beaten by BYD’s efficiency,” Tavares said.

Musk’s Divided Attention

Tavares suggested Musk might eventually leave the automotive industry entirely. “We can’t rule out that at some point, he’ll decide to leave the automotive industry to refocus on humanoid robots, SpaceX, or artificial intelligence,” he stated, pointing to Musk’s split focus across multiple ventures.

Market Reality Check

Tavares warned of a “colossal” stock market value loss for Tesla, calling its current valuation “stratospheric.” This comes despite Tesla reporting a 12% revenue increase to $28.1 billion in Q3, driven largely by a 33% delivery surge in China.

China Market Share Collapse

Despite recent growth, Tesla’s market share in China has plummeted from 16% in 2020 to just 5% today. Industry analysts confirm this reflects Tesla’s struggle against domestic competitors like BYD, Nio, and XPeng, who are expanding rapidly with cheaper models and advanced technology.

Controversial Pay Package

In related news, Tesla has proposed a 10-year compensation package for Elon Musk worth $1 trillion, tied to ambitious goals including increasing Tesla’s market value by 500% to $8.5 trillion. Board chair Robyn Denholm defended the proposal, stating, “If you prefer that Tesla turn into just another car company mired in the ways of the past, then you should follow ISS and Glass Lewis.”
