NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Breaks Silence on Billups, Rozier Gambling Arrests

Key Takeaways

  • NBA Commissioner Adam Silver describes the arrests of Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier in a gambling probe as “deeply disturbing”.
  • Both individuals have been placed on administrative leave as the FBI investigation continues.
  • The scandal has intensified scrutiny of the NBA’s partnerships with betting companies.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has broken his silence following the shocking arrests of Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier in a federal gambling investigation. The commissioner expressed deep disturbance over the scandal that also involves former player Damon Jones and alleged connections to New York crime families.

Silver’s Reaction to the Scandal

Speaking during Amazon Prime Video’s broadcast of the Celtics-Knicks game, Silver admitted the news left him reeling.

“My initial reaction was I was deeply disturbed,” Silver said. “There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition. I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting. ”

The commissioner confirmed both Billups and Rozier have been placed on administrative leave while the league cooperates with federal authorities.

“I apologize to our fans that we are all dealing with this situation,” he said.

Allegations Against Terry Rozier

Federal prosecutors allege Rozier conspired with associates to manipulate betting outcomes by leaking insider information and deliberately underperforming. In one March 2023 instance, Rozier allegedly told partners he would leave a Charlotte Hornets game early with a supposed injury, helping bettors win over $200,000.

Chauncey Billups’ Alleged Involvement

Meanwhile, Billups is accused of participating in rigged poker games backed by organized crime. Investigators claim the games used x-ray tables and pre-marked cards to defraud players of millions. The FBI said the operation connected to New York’s Bonanno, Gambino, Lucchese, and Genovese families.

NBA’s Previous Investigation

Silver revealed the NBA previously investigated Rozier’s betting activity in 2023 but found “insufficient evidence” to take action.

“We frankly couldn’t find anything,” Silver explained. “Terry at the time cooperated. He gave the league office his phone. He sat down for an interview. And we ultimately concluded that there was insufficient evidence despite that aberrational behavior to move forward.

He still hasn’t been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry. Obviously, it doesn’t look good. But he’s now been put on administrative leave. There’s a balance here of protecting people’s rights and investigating. ”

League-Wide Concerns About Gambling Ties

The scandal has reignited debate about the NBA’s deep integration with the gambling industry through partnerships with FanDuel and DraftKings.

Coaches across the league expressed concern about blurred ethical lines.

“It’s really sad,” said Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers. “The outside world, in my day, couldn’t get to us. And now they can, with ease.”

Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff added, “Once you introduce gambling that the sports world has now, there’s going to be some very dangerous situations out there for everybody.”

The league emphasizes its strict monitoring systems and educational programs as the FBI investigation continues.
