Sri Lanka Edge Bangladesh by 7 Runs in Thrilling Women’s World Cup Clash

Bangladesh Suffer Dramatic Collapse as Sri Lanka Clinch Thrilling 7-Run Victory

Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning comeback victory against Bangladesh in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, winning by just 7 runs in a match that saw Bangladesh collapse spectacularly in the final two overs.

Key Takeaways

  • Sri Lanka defend 202 runs in dramatic fashion
  • Bangladesh lose 4 wickets in 4 balls during final over
  • Chamari Athapaththu takes 3 wickets in decisive 50th over
  • Hasini Perera’s career-best 85 sets up Sri Lankan total

Final Over Carnage

Chasing a modest 203 for victory, Bangladesh seemed in control with skipper Nigar Sultana (77) and Sharmin Akhter (64) both scoring fine half-centuries. However, the match turned dramatically in the final two overs.

Bangladesh lost four wickets in four balls during the 50th over, with Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu claiming three wickets and a run-out completing the collapse. The team had already lost Ritu Moni in the 49th over, eventually finishing at 195/9.

Sri Lanka’s Batting Performance

Earlier, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 202 despite Hasini Perera’s career-best 85. Captain Chamari Athapaththu contributed 46 and Nilakshika Silva added 37, but disciplined Bangladeshi bowling kept the total manageable.

Perera’s innings was notable for featuring 12 boundaries and a six, though she was dropped twice on 55 and 63. Shorna Akter’s brilliant 3/27 spell was instrumental in restricting Sri Lanka.

Early Setbacks and Recovery

Sri Lanka suffered an early blow when Vishmi Gunaratne was dismissed LBW off the very first ball by Marufa Akter. The 72-run partnership between Athapaththu and Perera steadied the innings, with Athapaththu scoring at a strike rate of 120 before falling to Rabeya Khan.

The middle order struggled with Harshitha Samarawickrama run out for 4 and Kavisha Dilhari stumped, leaving Sri Lanka at 100/4. The 74-run partnership between Perera and Silva provided hope for a larger total before the final collapse.

This crucial victory keeps Sri Lanka’s semifinal hopes alive in the tournament.
