Snapchat Outage Continues: Users Lose Streaks and Friends After AWS Issues

Key Takeaways

  • Snapchat faces ongoing outages despite AWS claiming to have fixed the underlying DNS issue
  • Over 21,000 outage reports peaked in the US, with users losing streaks and friends lists
  • 62% of users report app problems, 34% face server connection issues
  • AWS says most operations are normal but some requests may be throttled

Snapchat continues to experience significant disruptions following the AWS outage, with users reporting lost streaks, vanished friends lists, and persistent app issues. Despite Amazon Web Services claiming to have resolved the underlying DNS problem, Snapchat users are facing a fresh wave of outages.

Current Outage Status

Outage tracking platform Downdetector shows a major spike in Snapchat reports in the United States. Reports peaked at approximately 3:12 AM ET with over 21,000 complaints, followed by another surge around 8:57 AM ET with more than 10,000 reports.

The breakdown shows 62% of users experiencing problems with the Snapchat app itself, while 34% report server connection issues. Only 4% indicate problems with the Snapchat website. A smaller spike is also emerging on Downdetector’s Indian platform.

User Complaints and Issues

Social media platforms are flooded with complaints from frustrated Snapchat users. Many report being unable to access the platform entirely, while others face specific feature disruptions.

The most concerning complaints involve users losing their Snap streaks and friends disappearing from their contact lists. The company has not yet confirmed whether lost streaks will be restored.

“Snap was down some places in the world due to AWS outage. I was one of them, and I lost some data on Snap and it’s all bugged and can’t use it,” wrote one user on Reddit.

“Yeah, same. Everyone’s gone. My Snap Map is bugged, I can’t add anyone. It shows everyone as ‘not found.’ I contacted them, hopefully they reply,” another user added.

Additional issues include Snap memories not displaying properly and ongoing problems sending snaps to friends.

AWS Status Update

Amazon Web Services, the world’s largest cloud service provider, stated it has resolved the core issue behind the widespread outage. In a Monday afternoon status update, AWS confirmed: “The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now. Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution.”
