New Flu Virus in China Shows Pandemic Potential, Scientists Warn

Key Takeaways

  • New Influenza D variant D/HY11 detected in China shows ability to infect human airway cells
  • 74% of Northeast China population has antibodies, suggesting widespread prior exposure
  • Virus resists common flu drug Tamiflu but responds to newer antiviral baloxavir
  • Airborne transmission confirmed in animal studies, raising pandemic concerns

Chinese scientists have identified a new flu virus variant that shows alarming potential to infect humans, sparking renewed pandemic fears. The Influenza D strain D/HY11, first found in cattle in 2023, has demonstrated ability to replicate in human respiratory cells and spread through airborne transmission.

Virus Discovery and Human Infection Risk

Researchers at Changchun Veterinary Research Institute discovered the D/HY11 strain initially appeared in northeast China cattle in 2023. Laboratory tests confirmed the virus can replicate in human airway cells and animal tissue, indicating it may already be circulating among humans.

Alarming Transmission Evidence

Animal experiments showed the virus spreads through the air between ferrets without direct contact. Blood tests revealed 74% of people in Northeast China carry antibodies for Influenza D, suggesting prior exposure. Among those with recent respiratory symptoms, the exposure rate jumped to 97%.

Drug Resistance Concerns

The D/HY11 virus resisted common flu medication Tamiflu but responded to newer antiviral drug baloxavir. Scientists noted the virus’s polymerase showed heightened activity, potentially enabling easier spread among mammals.

Silent Spread for Years

Archived blood samples indicate Influenza D may have been circulating in northeastern China since 2020. Researchers warn about “cryptic transmission in humans with mild or asymptomatic infections” through emerging D/HY11-like viruses.

“Currently, no routine IDV testing is carried out anywhere in the world, facilitating concerns about the silent spread of this panzootic virus and the potential emergence of new varieties,” researchers stated.

Frequently Asked Questions
