Mumbai Monorail Services Suspended from Sept 20 for System Upgrades

Mumbai Monorail Services Suspended for Major Upgrades

Mumbai’s monorail services will be completely suspended from September 20 for comprehensive system upgrades, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Tuesday. The suspension affects both directions between Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Saat Rasta) routes.

Key Upgrades Planned

  • Commissioning of new rolling stock
  • Implementation of advanced CBTC signalling system
  • Refurbishment of existing monorail fleet
  • Integration of 10 new rakes (8 already delivered)

The authority stated that the four-hour nightly maintenance window was insufficient for the required upgrades, necessitating complete suspension.

Recent Technical Issues

The decision follows multiple technical glitches that disrupted services recently:

  • Monday: Train halted between Antop Hill Bus Depot and GTBN station, 17 passengers rescued
  • August 19: 582 passengers stranded near Mysore Colony station during heavy rains
  • Same day: Another train stuck at Acharya Atre Nagar station, 200 passengers evacuated

MMRDA has established a committee to investigate these recurring technical issues.

Official Statements

“This planned block will allow faster integration of new rolling stock, advanced CBTC signalling upgrades, and refurbishment of the existing fleet, ensuring safer, smoother, and more reliable operations for Mumbaikars,” the MMRDA release stated.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde assured: “With the cooperation of Mumbaikars, we will bring back the monorail in a stronger form.”

MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee described the suspension as necessary to make the system “safer, more dependable, and future-ready”.

About Mumbai Monorail

As India’s only monorail system, the Mumbai monorail operates on a 19.74-kilometre route connecting Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in south Mumbai with Chembur in the eastern suburbs. The first phase (8.26km) opened in February 2014, with the full route becoming operational in March 2019.
