Google to Build World’s Largest AI Hub in Visakhapatnam with $15B Investment

Key Takeaways

  • Google announces world’s largest AI and data hub outside the US in Visakhapatnam
  • $15 billion investment over 5 years for 1-gigawatt campus
  • Project expected to create 180,000 jobs and boost India’s AI capabilities

Google has unveiled plans to build its largest artificial intelligence and data centre hub globally outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The tech giant will invest $15 billion over five years in this landmark project.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced the initiative on October 14, 2025, at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi. The 1-gigawatt data centre campus will integrate AI infrastructure, renewable energy, and expanded fibre networks.

“It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the US,” Kurian said, adding that the centre could eventually “scale to multiple gigawatts.”

Leadership Endorsements

Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the Visakhapatnam project as a “landmark development” combining gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure.

“Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development,” Pichai posted on X.

Strategic Importance

The hub will transform Visakhapatnam into a global AI innovation center serving India and the Asia-Pacific region. Kurian emphasized it will “house data locally and help power AI-driven solutions across sectors.”

Government Support

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the project supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

“Prime Minister Modi was clear that Google has to come to India for this,” Naidu stated. “We brought Microsoft to Hyderabad earlier, and today, Google is coming to Visakhapatnam.”

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted the investment would strengthen India’s AI Mission and skill development. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called it “a reflection of harmony between progressive policymaking and dynamic governance.”

Project Details

The agreement serves as the anchor project for the AI City Vizag initiative, featuring a 1-gigawatt hyperscale data centre campus with clean energy integration. The project is expected to create approximately 180,000 jobs.

Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh described it as a “game-changing investment” after “a year of intense discussions.”

“It is a massive leap for our state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing,” Lokesh wrote on X, adding, “This is just the beginning.”

The announcement comes amid growing competition among tech giants to expand AI infrastructure in India, with Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI also increasing their presence in the country.
