Trump: Tariff Threats Forced India-Pakistan Ceasefire in 24 Hours

Trump Claims Tariff Threats Forced India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Former US President Donald Trump asserted at the Gaza Peace Summit that his administration prevented a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan by threatening massive trade tariffs, though India has consistently denied any third-party involvement in the bilateral ceasefire agreement.

Key Points

  • Trump claimed 100-200% tariff threats resolved India-Pakistan conflict within 24 hours
  • India maintains ceasefire was reached bilaterally without US intervention
  • Former president cited this as one of seven peace deals his administration brokered
  • Statements made during Gaza Peace Summit and multiple media interviews

Summit Statements on Nuclear Neighbors

Speaking at the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Trump expressed confidence that India and Pakistan “are going to live very nicely together.” He praised Indian leadership while addressing the gathering of world leaders about regional diplomacy.

Background: Pahalgam Attack and Military Response

The remarks followed a tense period in India-Pakistan relations. On April 22, 26 tourists including 25 Indians died in the Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-backed extremists.

India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The military action neutralized key targets and prevented further escalation.

Tariff Threats as Peace Tool

Trump detailed his approach during an Air Force One briefing: “I settled a few of the wars just based on tariffs. For example, between India and Pakistan, I said… I am going to put big tariffs on you both, like 100 per cent, 150 per cent and 200 per cent.”

He claimed the strategy produced results within 24 hours, stating “If I did not have tariffs, you could have never settled that war.”

Multiple Claims of Intervention

In an October 9 Fox News interview, Trump repeated the assertion that trade pressure resolved at least five of seven peace deals his administration facilitated.

“You look at India and Pakistan. I said well we are not going to do business with either of you if you do not put it together. These are two nuclear nations… within 24 hours I had a peace deal that they stopped the fighting,” Trump said.

He has frequently described himself as a dealmaker, claiming “Having the ability to use tariffs have brought peace to the world.”

Nobel Peace Prize Aspirations

On September 21, Trump suggested he deserved Nobel Peace Prize consideration, citing conflict resolutions including India-Pakistan and Thailand-Cambodia during an American Cornerstone Institute event.

India’s Contradiction

Indian officials have consistently refuted Trump’s claims, maintaining the ceasefire resulted from bilateral negotiations after Pakistan initiated contact with India, with no third-party mediation involved.

The Gaza Summit statements highlighted Trump’s characteristically public, high-stakes approach to diplomacy—blending trade threats with political spectacle in what he calls his peacemaking formula.
