India’s Batting Collapse Costs Them Against Australia in Women’s World Cup

India Fall Short Despite Strong Start Against Australia

India suffered a heartbreaking three-wicket defeat to Australia in the Women’s World Cup, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitting her team fell 30-40 runs short after squandering a dominant batting position.

Key Takeaways

  • India collapsed from 198/1 to 330 all out despite a 155-run opening partnership
  • Alyssa Healy’s magnificent 142 guided Australia to victory with six balls remaining
  • Harmanpreet Kaur identified the final six overs as the turning point

Batting Collapse Proves Costly

Openers Smriti Mandhana (80) and Pratika Rawal (75) provided a dream start, taking India to 198/1 in 30 overs. However, the middle and lower order collapsed dramatically, losing nine wickets for 138 runs and getting bowled out for 330 in 48.5 overs.

“The way we started, we could have added 30-40 more runs. We missed runs in the last six overs, and that cost us,” Kaur stated in the post-match presentation.

Healy’s Masterclass Seals Australian Victory

Australian captain Alyssa Healy played a match-winning innings of 142 runs from just 107 deliveries. Supported by Ellyse Perry (47*) and Ashleigh Gardner (45), Australia chased down the target of 331 with six balls to spare, finishing at 331/7.

Captain’s Assessment

Kaur highlighted the contrast with previous matches where India’s lower order had bailed them out. “Last three games, we were not able to bat in the middle overs. Our lower order took responsibility. Today, the first 40 overs were good,” she explained.

The Indian skipper defended the team’s five-bowler strategy despite recent struggles. “This combination has given us success. Two bad games are not going to make a difference,” Kaur asserted.

Bright Spot in Bowling

Kaur singled out young spinner N Shree Charani for praise, noting her ability to contain even the dangerous Healy. “She has been outstanding. We have a lot of hope from her to give breakthroughs,” the captain said.

Looking ahead, Kaur expressed confidence in her team’s ability to bounce back and secure a semifinal berth in the remaining matches.
