UPI Payments via ChatGPT Launching Soon After Successful Pilot
Indian users will soon be able to make UPI payments directly through ChatGPT, eliminating the need to switch to dedicated payment apps. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has partnered with Razorpay and OpenAI to launch this feature, showcased at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai.
Key Takeaways
- UPI payments are coming to ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
- The feature uses UPI’s Reserve Pay for merchant-specific transactions.
- BigBasket and Vodafone Idea will be the first platforms to enable it.
- NPCI also announced new biometric authentication for UPI.
Pilot Program and Integration
Razorpay has confirmed the UPI feature recently concluded private beta testing. This allows transactions to be completed through an AI agent without leaving the ChatGPT interface, streamlining the payment process significantly.
According to a Reuters report, the pilot aims to examine the security and user-friendliness of making UPI payments using AI tools. The capability will be based on UPI’s Reserve Pay feature, which lets users allocate funds for specific merchants.
Banking and Platform Partners
Airtel Payments Bank and Axis Bank will serve as banking partners for the Razorpay-run pilot. The Tata Group’s BigBasket and Vodafone Idea will be the first platforms to enable UPI payments through ChatGPT.
Razorpay co-founder Harshil Mathur stated the trial of the new agentic AI payment system has concluded and will be integrated into AI tools like ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
Separate Biometric UPI Upgrade
In separate news, NPCI announced a new biometric payment feature for UPI users. This upgrade will allow authentication using face or fingerprint instead of a PIN, making UPI more secure and convenient. Users will also soon make UPI payments using smartglasses.
This biometric feature will soon be available across major platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
