PM Modi Launches Rs 693 Crore Fisheries Projects to Boost Blue Economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a significant push for India’s fisheries sector, inaugurating and laying foundation stones for 16 projects valued at over Rs 693 crore. The initiatives, part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), were announced during a special Krishi programme at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister emphasized that sectors like animal husbandry, fisheries, and beekeeping are being actively promoted to provide additional income sources, particularly for small and landless farmers.

Major Fisheries Projects Launched

Trout Fisheries Project, Uttarakhand (Rs 170 crore): This FIDF project aims to increase trout fish production in the region and generate substantial employment opportunities.

Smart & Integrated Fishing Harbour, Karaikal (Rs 119.94 crore): The modern facility will ensure safe docking of fishing vessels, promote hygienic fish handling, enhance production, and improve marketing of quality fish for both export and domestic markets.

Integrated Aqua Park, Odisha (Rs 100 crore): Located at Hirakud in Sambalpur, this PMMSY project will transform aquaculture through a comprehensive ecosystem supporting tilapia and pangasius production, cage farming, hatchery operations, and fish processing. The facility includes multiple specialized parks and will eventually support 1,600 cages, benefit 1,700 farmers, and train 700 individuals.

Nutrition Hub of Sustainable Aquaculture, Uttar Pradesh (Rs 70 crore): The Amethi-based facility will promote eco-friendly fish feed manufacturing, boost fish production, and enhance farmer profitability through capacity building and advanced nutrition solutions.

These infrastructure developments are expected to strengthen the fisheries sector, create employment, boost exports, and usher in a new era for India’s Blue Economy.
