Zelenskyy Urges Trump to Broker Ukraine Peace After Gaza Deal

Key Takeaways

  • Zelenskyy praised Trump’s Gaza peace deal as an “outstanding achievement”
  • Ukrainian president urged Trump to broker similar peace for Ukraine war
  • Leaders discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense against Russian strikes
  • Zelenskyy emphasized need for Russian willingness to engage in real diplomacy

Zelenskyy Seeks Trump’s Help After Gaza Peace Success

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly praised Donald Trump’s Middle East peace deal and urged the US President to replicate this success in Ukraine. In a significant diplomatic development, Zelenskyy described his Saturday conversation with Trump as “positive and productive” while calling for American mediation to end Russia’s invasion.

“I had a call with US President Donald Trump – a very positive and productive one. I congratulated @POTUS on his success and the Middle East deal he was able to secure, which is an outstanding achievement. If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well – including the Russian war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

Air Defense and Diplomatic Strength

The Ukrainian leader specifically mentioned ongoing Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during their discussion. Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for Trump’s willingness to support Kyiv and revealed they explored concrete agreements to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

“We discussed opportunities to bolster our air defence, as well as concrete agreements that we are working on to ensure this. There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us,” he stated.

Zelenskyy emphasized that ending the war requires genuine Russian willingness to engage in diplomacy, noting that “this can be achieved through strength.”

Gaza Deal Sets Precedent

The Ukrainian president’s statement followed Thursday’s landmark agreement between Israel and Hamas that established a ceasefire and facilitated hostage-prisoner exchanges. This deal, brokered through Trump’s initiative, represents the most significant step toward ending the two-year Gaza conflict that has claimed over 67,000 Palestinian lives.

The Gaza breakthrough comes as Trump has intensified efforts to mediate in the Ukraine conflict, maintaining communication with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Evolving US-Ukraine Relations

Relations between Zelenskyy and Trump have improved dramatically since their contentious White House meeting earlier this year. Trump has since described the Ukrainian leader as a “nice guy” while continuing support for Ukraine.

The two leaders previously met during September’s UN General Assembly in New York. However, recent Alaska summit talks between Trump and Putin in August failed to produce any breakthrough in peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy continues seeking international support from European allies and other nations, including India, to pressure Moscow into ending hostilities and engaging in meaningful peace talks.
