Skywatchers were treated to a breathtaking celestial spectacle as May’s full moon, popularly known as the Flower Moon, rose gracefully into the evening sky.
A striking video capturing the moment has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention for its vivid beauty.
The video, shared on X by Rob Wright of Rob Wright Images, shows the luminous full moon rising behind the iconic Whaleback Light near New Castle.
As the moon slowly emerges above the horizon, its warm golden hue contrasts beautifully with the darkening sky and the silhouette of the lighthouse, creating a postcard-like scene.
Astronomy enthusiasts note that this is the first of two full moons to occur in May 2026. The second, set for May 31, will be a relatively rare Blue Moon, a term used when two full moons occur within the same calendar month.
WHY IS IT CALLED FLOWER MOON?
The name “Flower Moon” has its roots in traditional seasonal naming practices. It originates from Native American and early colonial traditions, where each full moon was named to reflect changes in nature.
May is a time when spring is in full bloom across much of the Northern Hemisphere, with flowers blossoming abundantly. Hence, the full moon during this period came to be known as the Flower Moon, symbolising growth, renewal, and the peak of springtime beauty.
While the name carries cultural significance, the moon itself does not physically change colour or structure. Its appearance, often slightly orange or golden when near the horizon, is due to atmospheric scattering of light.
