Rain, heat, and thunderstorms: Saturday to bring its own weather across India

If you are stepping out on Saturday, check the sky first. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a contrasting picture across the country on Saturday, May 2.

Heavy rain is lashing the east and south, while North India is baking under a punishing Sun.

A fresh Western Disturbance, which is a weather system that originates over the Mediterranean and travels eastward, carrying moisture to the Indian subcontinent, is set to affect the Himalayan region from Saturday.

Another Western Disturbance is already active over Jammu and Kashmir, driving a cyclonic circulation, which is a rotating mass of air, over North Punjab.

WHICH STATES WILL SEE HEAVY RAIN ON MAY 2?

Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the northeastern states are in line for moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday.

Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh will also witness rain and thunderstorms.

Light showers are expected in West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.

This will bring a brief respite from the gathering heat.

A trough, which is an elongated zone of low atmospheric pressure, stretching from North Odisha all the way to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, is actively fuelling pre-monsoon weather along the eastern coast.

HOW HOT WILL IT GET IN NORTH INDIA TOMORROW?

For those in the plains, Delhi, Gurugram, and surrounding areas, Saturday will be a scorcher.

Temperatures are expected to peak between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, with hazy skies making conditions feel even more stifling.

A trough running from Punjab to southwest Rajasthan is pushing dry, dusty air across northwest India.

Several states had recorded a dip of three to four degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours following widespread rainfall. That cool spell, however, will be short-lived for residents of the plains.

WHY IS THE WEATHER SO ERRATIC ACROSS INDIA?

The recent burst of activity, from thunderstorms in Jharkhand to heavy rain in Odisha and south Kerala, is the result of multiple weather systems interacting simultaneously, including Western Disturbances, cyclonic circulations, and wind discontinuities across peninsular India.

With the pre-monsoon season in full swing, such dynamic spells will only become more frequent.

If you are in northern India, stay indoors during peak heat between noon and four in the afternoon. If you are in the east or south, keep an umbrella close.
