Skyroot Aerospace inches closer to India’s first private Vikram-I rocket launch

India’s private space ambitions moved a step closer to reality as Skyroot Aerospace advanced toward the maiden launch of its Vikram-1 rocket, with key pre-launch milestones now completed.

In a significant development, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy visited Skyroot’s Max-Q Campus in Hyderabad to ceremonially flag off the Vikram-1 launch vehicle as it begins its journey to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

The event marks a symbolic and logistical step toward what could become India’s first privately built orbital rocket launch.

Skyroot Aerospace confirmed that Vikram-1 has completed its Integrated Electrical Test (IET) Campaign-Phase 3 of its pre-launch testing programme. This phase is widely regarded as one of the most critical milestones before launch, as it validates the rocket’s readiness as a fully integrated system.

According to the company, the campaign “brought everything together, the vehicle, ground software, and electrical interfaces, running as one system for the first time.” The test ensured that all onboard systems function cohesively under simulated launch conditions.

Engineers conducted rigorous checks to verify that every system initialized correctly. Sensors, actuators, and control elements were tested for precise responsiveness to commands, mimicking real-time launch scenarios.

Equally crucial was the coordination between teams, which was rehearsed to reflect actual launch-day operations.

WHAT IS VIKRAM-I ROCKET?

The Vikram-1 rocket is part of Skyroot’s broader effort to offer cost-effective and responsive launch services for small satellites, a rapidly growing segment of the global space economy.

Named after Indian space pioneer Vikram Sarabhai, the vehicle is designed to place payloads into low Earth orbit with flexibility and efficiency.

The progress comes as India opens up its space sector to private players under reforms led by Indian Space Research Organisation and related regulatory bodies. Skyroot is among the frontrunners in this new ecosystem, having already demonstrated capabilities through suborbital missions.

Despite the successful completion of major testing milestones, the company has not yet announced a final launch date for Vikram-1. Industry observers suggest that final integration checks and regulatory clearances could determine the timeline.

If successful, the Vikram-1 mission would mark a historic moment for India’s private space industry, positioning Skyroot Aerospace as a key player in the global launch market and signaling a new era of commercial spaceflight from the country.
