Isro successfully tests powerful new engine for India’s heaviest rocket

India has taken a massive leap in its journey to conquer the stars. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) successfully conducted a high-power test of the CE20 cryogenic engine, at the Isro Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.

This powerful engine reached a 22-tonne thrust level, which is the force needed to push a rocket upward against gravity. This success marks a critical step for the future of the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3), India’s heaviest rocket.

Cryogenic engines are the most complex parts of a rocket because they use fuels at extremely low temperatures. They run on liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are gases turned into liquids by cooling them to hundreds of degrees below zero.

These liquids are difficult to handle, but they provide the massive energy needed to push heavy satellites into orbit.

This latest test was not just about raw power; it also checked a nozzle protection system, which keeps the engine tail from melting, and a multi-element igniter, which is like a spark plug that ensures the engine starts reliably.

Isro is currently working on making its rockets more reliable than ever. By testing these engines at sea level under high pressure, engineers can ensure that everything works perfectly before the rocket ever leaves the ground. This success is a major win for upcoming missions that will carry heavier loads into space.

WHICH ENGINE POWERS INDIA’S HEAVIEST ROCKET?

The CE20 is the high-performance heart of the LVM3, which is the most powerful rocket in the Isro fleet. It is the engine that provides the power once the rocket reaches the upper stages of its flight.

By pushing this engine to a 22-tonne thrust, Isro is ensuring that our rockets have the muscle to carry bigger satellites and even humans into space. This specific test lasted for 165 seconds, proving the hardware can withstand the intense heat of a real launch.

WHY IS THE MAHENDRAGIRI TEST A BIG DEAL FOR INDIA?

The test in Mahendragiri was successful because the engine performed exactly as expected under intense heat and pressure. The new ignition system worked flawlessly, and the nozzle protection kept the hardware safe during the burn.

These upgrades mean the engine is now much more robust, implying it is stronger and less likely to fail. This reduces the chance of any technical glitches during an actual space mission manifold.

HOW DOES THIS TEST HELP FUTURE INDIAN SPACE MISSIONS?

The LVM3 is the same rocket that successfully sent Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon. By making the engine stronger, Isro is preparing for even bigger goals.

This success directly supports the Gaganyaan mission, where Indian astronauts will go into orbit. The first uncrewed flight is planned for 2026, followed by a human mission in 2027.

This test proves the engine can safely handle the thrust needed to keep our Gaganyatris safe while they travel through the atmosphere.
