Police officer and suspect shot during active shooter incident in Baltimore

A police officer and a suspected gunman were shot during an active shooter incident in the US city of Baltimore on Tuesday.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, the shooting happened around 12:30 pm in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue in northwest Baltimore, Maryland.

Officers responding to reports of an armed suspect encountered gunfire, leading to an exchange that left both a police officer and the suspect wounded.

Police said the injured officer was taken for treatment. The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening. The details about the suspect’s condition remain unknown.

Authorities secured the area and asked members of the public to avoid the surrounding streets while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.

Tactical units and additional officers were deployed to the neighbourhood as police worked to ensure there was no further threat to residents.

The incident occurred in a part of northwest Baltimore that includes several community buildings and places of worship. Initial reports suggested that the scene was near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue. However, police later clarified that the shooting did not take place inside a synagogue or any religious institution.

Officials described the situation as an “active shooter incident.”

Investigators have not yet confirmed the circumstances that led to the shooting or whether the suspect targeted police directly.
