Indian-origin boss of England and Wales police federation, Mukund Krishna, arrested on suspicion of corruption

The City of London Police arrested Mukund Krishna, the head of the Police Federation of England and Wales, on suspicion of corruption on Wednesday. Police said its domestic corruption unit has been investigating allegations of fraud by abuse of position inside the federation over the last year. The investigation is complex and ongoing, it said.

Officers carried out search warrants in Wales, Somerset, London and Surrey.

Detective Superintendent James Halkett said: “The City of London Police domestic corruption unit are leading a criminal investigation into allegations of fraud made against three individuals connected to the national Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW).

“A 46-year-old man from Surrey, a 51-year-old man from Wales and a 55-year-old man from Bristol were all arrested on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position.

“This is a complex and active investigation in which we are pursuing all lines of inquiry.”

Is Mukund Krishna a cop? What is the Police Federation of England and Wales?

The Police Federation of England and Wales is the organisation that represents rank-and-file police officers (from constable up to chief inspector) across England and Wales, providing welfare support, representation and negotiating on pay and conditions. Mukund Krishna was appointed as the first-ever CEO of the Police Federation of England and Wales in 2024.

He is not a police and in fact his background was in management. Before joining the deferation, he worked as a management consultant and leader of major transformation programmes, including roles in the UK and overseas, and held senior positions overseeing large-scale organisational change. His appointment in the role from his non-police background and on a £320,000 salary a year drew scruntiny earlier as well.

A spokesperson of the federation said: “We are aware that three individuals connected to the Police Federation have been arrested as part of an ongoing police investigation. This is a live matter and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. The organisation is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.”
