6 Ropeway Corridors in Tamil Nadu: Centre Seeks DPRs Under Parvatmala

6 Game-Changing Ropeway Corridors Planned for Tamil Nadu

The Centre has initiated the process to develop six major ropeway corridors across Tamil Nadu under the Parvatmala Scheme, with detailed project reports now being prepared for these transformative connectivity projects.

Key Takeaways

  • Six ropeway corridors identified across Tamil Nadu’s popular hill and pilgrimage sites
  • Route lengths range from 0.5 km to 4.6 km
  • Technical consultants given six-month deadline for detailed project reports
  • Projects aim to reduce travel time and provide safer access to difficult terrain

Identified Ropeway Routes

The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has identified ropeway corridors at: Glenmorgan Power House in Ooty, Parvathamalai in Tiruvannamalai, Kurangani to Top Station, Thoranamalai Murugan Temple, and two separate routes at Sathuragiri Hills in Virudhunagar district.

The route lengths vary significantly, ranging from 0.5 kilometers to 4.6 kilometers, catering to different terrain challenges across these locations.

Project Development Process

Technical consultants have been instructed to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) that will include comprehensive topographical and geotechnical surveys. The scope also covers cost estimation, alignment options development, and traffic potential assessment.

Consultants will also examine environmental and forest sensitivities, assist with statutory approvals, create concession frameworks, and outline land acquisition requirements. The Request for Proposal sets strict technical and financial qualification standards for bidders with a six-month deadline.

Parvatmala Scheme Objectives

The Parvatmala Pariyojana aims to promote ropeway transport nationwide to significantly cut travel time while improving last-mile access. The scheme provides low-impact mobility options in sensitive ecosystems, making it ideal for Tamil Nadu’s difficult-to-access hills and pilgrimage sites.

These ropeway systems will help manage foot traffic and offer safer alternatives to steep trekking paths, enhancing both tourist experience and local accessibility.

Additional Cable Transport Studies

Simultaneously, Chennai Metro Rail Limited is exploring the feasibility of cable-propelled systems in Kodaikanal, Udhagamandalam, and Mamallapuram. These studies focus on improving connectivity within crowded hill towns, complementing the ropeway corridor initiatives.
