Google Confirms Ads Coming to Gemini AI and Other AI Experiences

Key Takeaways

  • Google confirms ads are coming to Gemini AI and other AI experiences
  • Experiments already underway for ads in AI Mode and Google AI products
  • OpenAI also exploring ad integration in ChatGPT based on memory feature

Google is officially bringing advertisements to its AI products, including the Gemini chatbot and AI Mode, as confirmed by a senior company executive. This marks a significant shift in how the tech giant plans to monetize its artificial intelligence offerings beyond subscriptions.

Robbie Stein, Vice President of Product at Google, revealed during the “Silicon Valley Girl” podcast that the company has begun experimenting with ads within its AI experiences. “Don’t see them going away,” Stein stated about advertisements, adding that “users are starting to see some ads experiments there too.”

Google’s AI Advertising Strategy

While Google has built its business on search advertising for decades, the rise of AI chatbots threatened to disrupt this revenue model. The company responded by enhancing its search with AI features like AI Overviews and developing Gemini, which now integrates across various Google products from smartwatches to televisions.

Stein described the advertising integration as “an opportunity in the future to be even more helpful for you, particularly in an advertising context.” He noted that Google is exploring “new and novel ad formats” but emphasized that “it’s early days in finalizing how ads might appear in these systems.”

OpenAI Following Similar Path

Google isn’t alone in seeking to monetize AI through advertising. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is also reportedly developing ad capabilities for its popular chatbot.

According to The Information, OpenAI is considering showing ads to users based on ChatGPT’s memory feature, which retains information about users to provide personalized experiences. This approach could force users to choose between personalized service with ads or a more limited ad-free experience.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed admiration for Instagram’s ad implementation, stating earlier this year: “I’m not totally against it. I can point to areas where I like ads. I think ads on Instagram are kinda cool. I bought a bunch of stuff from them. But I think it’d be very hard to—I mean, it’d take a lot of care to get right.”

The parallel moves by both AI giants suggest that advertising will likely become a standard feature across major AI platforms, similar to how it evolved in search engines and social media.
