Can a Chennai wedding break DMK-Congress seat deadlock ahead of Tamil Nadu polls?

A wedding in Chennai is set to double up as a high-stakes political venue today, as senior leaders from the Indian National Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam look to break the deadlock over seat-sharing talks ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The occasion is the wedding of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Selvaperunthagai’s daughter, where Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram are expected to be present. Sources indicate that what begins as a ceremonial gathering could turn into a crucial backchannel meeting aimed at diffusing weeks of tense negotiations. Sources indicate that MK Stalin has also called DML MP Kanimozhi for the meeting with Chidambaram.

STALEMATE ON SEAT SHARING

Seat-sharing discussions between the alliance partners have reportedly stalled, with the DMK unwilling to significantly raise its offer and the Congress reluctant to scale down its demands.

According to sources:

– The DMK has indicated a willingness to allot around 25–27 Assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha berth.

– The Congress leadership is pushing for a higher number, initially seeking around 35–45 seats, though some flexibility down to 32 has been discussed.

The widening gap has triggered unease within the Tamil Nadu Congress unit, with several state leaders privately expressing concern that an aggressive bargaining stance could weaken the party’s position rather than strengthen it.

CHIDAMBARAM TO PLAY MEDIATOR

With tensions mounting, P. Chidambaram is likely to step in as a mediator. Sources say the DMK leadership has not been entirely comfortable with the current Congress interlocutors handling the talks, and sees Chidambaram, a senior leader from Tamil Nadu with longstanding ties across party lines, as a more acceptable channel.

His expected interaction with M. K. Stalin at the wedding venue is being viewed as a possible turning point.

Political Calculations at Play

The DMK, which heads the ruling alliance in the state, is believed to be leveraging the promise of a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the negotiations. Sources suggest Congress has been given time until March 6 to resolve the impasse, failing which it may have to forgo the Upper House berth until next year.

Within the Congress, there is growing recognition that the party’s electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu are closely tied to its alliance with the DMK. Some leaders fear that prolonged brinkmanship could backfire, particularly with Assembly elections likely in April.

While officially a family celebration, the wedding could provide the perfect informal setting for a breakthrough. It remains to be seen if a consensus emerges from today’s interactions.
